Best Practices for Removing Malware from an Infected Computer

Here is a list of best practices that you can follow to remove malware from an infected computer:

  1. Back up all your important documents and data.
  2. Update the Anti-Virus software installed on the computer. After updating the software, stop and then start the program to ensure that it is running with the latest Anti-Virus definitions.
  3. Unplug the network cable.
  4. Close any open Web browser windows.
  5. Log on with administrative privileges.
  6. Disable System Restore.
  7. Delete the temporary files and clear your browser’s cache.
  8. Restart your computer in the Safe Mode.
  9. Configure the Anti-Virus to take appropriate action and then scan the computer.
  10. Write down the path of the infected file.
  11. Compress the infected file, add a password to it, and send it to an Anti-Virus vendor.
  12. Turn on System Restore.
  13. Reboot the computer.
  14. Re-scan your computer to check whether the malware is present on the computer.
