Description
This module helps you perform on demand scans on files, folders, storage devices, and the registry and schedule ODS to run automatically at a specific time. It checks your computer for security threats, such as viruses, spyware, and other malicious software and creates logs of all scan operations and infections during the scans.
When you click the Scan button, the tabbed page of ePC provides you with options for scanning the computer and peripheral storage devices. It also provides you with options for configuring the module. The details regarding each of the sections in the right pane are as follows:
- I. Check memory, registry and services -
- This link opens the Virus check dialog box, which helps you scan the memory, registry, and services running on the computer for viruses and other infections.

- This dialog box helps you scan the selected storage devices for malicious software.
- This dialog box displays the following information.
- Total Number of Objects Scanned - It shows the total number of objects scanned by the ‘e Scan monitor.
- Total Number of Objects Infected - It shows the total number of objects infected by malicious software.
- Total Number of Objects Disinfected - It shows the total number of objects cleaned by the ‘e Scan monitor.
- Total Number of Objects Renamed - It shows the total number of objects renamed by the ‘e Scan monitor.
- Total Number of Objects Deleted - It shows the total number of objects deleted by the ‘e Scan monitor.
- Total Number of Errors - It shows the total number of errors found by the ‘e Scan monitor.
- Time Elapsed - It shows the time elapsed since the scan started. The time is displayed in the hh:mm:ss format.
- In addition, the Virus check dialog box shows the following buttons.
- Set To Low Priority - You can click this button to run the scan as a low-priority process.
- View log - You can click this button to view the log in the form of a text file.
- Cancel - You can click this button to stop the scan.
- Start/Pause - This button is toggles between Start and Pause. It helps you start or pause the scan depending on the state of the button.
- II. Check computer - This link opens the Virus check dialog box, which helps you scan all the drives in the computer for malicious software.
- III. Scan USB drives - This link opens the Virus check dialog box, which helps you scan USB drives for malicious software. Note that a warning message is displayed when you click this option without plugging in a USB storage device.
- IV. Check CD ROM - This link opens the Virus check dialog box, which helps you scan CD ROMs for malicious software. Note that a warning message is displayed when you click this option without inserting a CD ROM in the CD ROM drive.
- V. Custom Scan - This link opens the Custom Scan Options dialog box.

- This dialog box helps you customize scans. With the help of this dialog box, you can configure ‘e Scan to scan the selected storage devices for malicious software.
- Scan spyware - You should select this check box if you need to can the drives and storage devices for Trojans, keyloggers, and other types of spyware.
- Check memory, registry and services - You should select this check box if you need to scan the memory, registry, and services for the presence of any malicious software or suspicious activity.
- Scan USB drives - You should select this check box when you need to scan USB storage drives for malicious software.
- Scan startup - You should select this check box if you need to scan the computer for malicious software when it starts up.
- Check local hard drives - You should select this check box if you need to scan the local hard drives for malicious software.
- Check following directories and files - [Default] This option is selected by default. You can select this check box when you need to scan specific files and directories.
- Browse - This button opens the Directory and file selection dialog box. You can select the files and folders that you need to scan by using this dialog box.
- Scan - This button is disabled by default and is enabled when you select any file or directory from the Directory and file selection dialog box.
- Options - When you click this link, the Options dialog box is displayed. This dialog box provides you with options for configuring the Scan module.
- This pane shows two tabs: Virus Check and Alert.
- Virus Check tab
- This tab helps you configure the actions that ‘e Scan should perform when an infection is detected. It allows you to set the priority of the scan process as High, Normal, or Low. It also helps you configure ‘e Scan to automatically recognize either all file types or only program files.
- In case of an infection – This list helps you configure the action that ‘e Scan should perform on the file when it finds that it is infected.
- Log only - When you select this option, ‘e Scan only logs the occurrence of the virus infection without taking any action.
- Delete infected file - When you select this option, ‘e Scan deletes the infected file.
- Automatic - [Default] When you select this option, ‘e Scan first tries to clean the file. If it is not possible to disinfect the file, ‘e Scan quarantines or deletes the file.
- Priority of scanner – This option helps you set the priority of the ‘e Scan scanner in relation to other processes running on the computer. The priority level can be high, normal, or low. By default, the scanner runs with low priority.
- High (short runtime) - When you select this option, the ODS scanner runs with a higher priority than other processes.
- Normal (normal runtime) - [Default] When you select this option, the ODS scanner runs with a normal priority.
- Low (long runtime) - When you select this option, the ODS scanner runs with a lower priority than other processes.
- File types – This option helps you select the type of files that should be scanned by ODS.
- Automatic type recognition. [Default] When you select this option, ODS will scan only program files or executable files.
- Only program files. When you select this option, ODS will scan only the program files stored on your computer.
- Alert tab
- This tab helps you configure the ‘e Scan to alert you when it detects malicious software on your computer.
- Alert - In this section, you can configure when ‘e Scan should notify you when the virus definitions are outdated or when a specified number of days have elapsed since you have last scanned your computer.
- Warn, if virus signature is more than. [Default] When you select this check box, ‘e Scan will notify you if the virus signature is older than the specified number of days. By default, ‘e Scan notifies you when your virus definitions are more than three days old.
- Warn, if the last computer scan was more than. When you select this check box, ‘e Scan will notify you when a specified number of days have elapsed since the computer was last scanned.
- Log Settings section - In this section, you can configure the log settings for the Scan module.
- Prepare log - [Default] When you select this check box, ‘e Scan creates an ODS log file at the specified path. The default path is c:\Program Files\eScan\LOG.
- Only infection to be logged - [Default] When this option is selected, ‘e Scan will log information only about infected files and the action taken on them in the ODS log.
- Full log - When this option is selected, the ODS log will contain information about all the files scanned by ‘e Scan.
- Scheduler - In this section, you can schedule ODS to scan your computer and storage devices for malicious objects. It contains a table, which displays the name of the schedule, the frequency of occurrence, and the next time it will be run.
- This section displays the following buttons.
- Refresh - You can click this button to refresh the schedule.
- Clear All - You can click this button to remove all the existing tasks added to the schedule.
- Add task - You can click this button to add a new scan task to the schedule. When you click this button, ‘e Scan opens the Automatic virus check dialog box.

- This dialog box includes the Job, Analysis extent, Schedule, and Virus check tabs.
- Job - This tab helps you specify the name, start type, and termination condition for a new task. If you select the start type as Start in foreground, the task will run in the foreground, otherwise, the task will run in the background and its window will be minimized. You can also select the termination condition for the task. For example, you can specify that the ODS should always quit automatically after it has finished scanning.
- Analysis extent - This tab presents you with options that help you select the type of scanning, and the directories, folders, or local hard drives- System as well as Data Drives and network drives to be scanned.
- Schedule - This tab helps you configure the options for scheduling system scans. You can schedule scans to run either once or on a daily, hourly, weekly, monthly basis, when the computer boots up, or on a given date at a specific time.
- Virus check - This tab provides you with the same options as the ones present on the Virus Check tab of the Scan module. You can configure ODS to perform a specific action when a virus infection is detected. You can also set the priority of the ‘e Scan scanner in relation to other processes running on the computer. The priority level can be high, normal, or low. By default, the scanner runs with low priority. In addition, you can configure ODS to scan only program files or executable files.
- Start now. You can click this button to start the selected task immediately.
- Edit. You can click this button to modify an existing task.
- Logs. You can view the reports of the scheduled ODS scans performed on your computer and storage devices in the Logs dialog box.
- This dialog box shows the following buttons.
- Refresh - You can click this button to refresh the displayed log file.
- Clear All - You can click this button to remove all the existing entries in the log file.
- View log - You can click this button to view the log file as text file.
