Spam Control - Greylisting
1. What is Greylisting?
A. Grey Listing is one of the features used by MailScan to control spam emails. Grey Listing method, when enabled, temporarily rejects a mail when it is received for the first time or from an unknown sender. A genuine mail-server will always retry to re-send the mail, while a spammer, generally, will not try to re-send those mails which fails to reach the recipient.
Greylisting checks for 3 basic informations to identify a mail, which is called as "TRIPLET":
- The ip address of the sender domain,
- The email address of the sender and
- The email address of the recipient
If the triplet is seen for the first time (i.e. the mail is sent to the recipient domain for the first time), then the mail is temporarily rejected. A temporary message is sent to the sender SMTP server like the one given below:
451 4.7.1 Please try again later
If the triplet has been seen and accepted by the recipient domain before, then the mail is accepted and delivered.
